Slave registers of Curaçao online

On the 17th of August a database was launched containing the slave registers of Curaçao between 1839 and 1863. In addition, the emancipation registers are also included in the database. These are overviews of people who were released in 1863 when slavery was abolished there.

The database is part of a project from the Radboud University and the Nationale Archives of Curaçao and the Netherlands to research the impact of slavery on the lives of the residents of Curaçao between 1839 and 1950. Researcher of this project Coen van Galen was previously also involved in the project on slave registers of Suriname.

Where can I find the database?
The database can be found and accessed via this link:

https://www.nationaalarchief.cw/api/picturae/slavenregister/persons

How can I search in it?
Besides the basic search field, there is an advanced search option where you can search -for instance- how many and which people were registered (inschrijfdatum) as slaves in 1839.

There is a special page with search tips. The site is in Dutch, but can be translated with Google into English or another language.

Scan of the original register are included and can be downloaded and saved.

The mobile version looks good as well!
