Images and copyright in academic publications
"I have just written an article and want to submit it. The images I found on the internet are essential to this publication and I want to include them. Can I submit the article with the copied images without breaking any copyright regulations?"
The SURF website offers a quick reference guide to questions like this one on the use of images and copyright in an academic publication. It states that a researcher can quote copyright images under certain conditions:
The quotation must:
- serve a purpose; the quotation must be used as notification or review in an academic paper or for a similar purpose;
- be proportionate; you should not quote more than necessary;
- state the source and creator’s name;
- come from a published source. In addition, make it clear that it is a quote, for instance, by adding “image quotation” or putting a frame around it in the same way as you use inverted commas when quoting text.
Questions on copyrights?
You can always send an e-mail to our copyright team at the library or send them to me. The UvA also has a web page with more information on images and copyrights in education.
