Looking for newspaper articles?

Newspaper articles are primary sources that can be used as an information provider on a certain subject or an inspiration source when you are looking for a research topic. Here is an overview of newspaper resources at the UvA library. I will also explain what to do if we do not provide access to a certain newspaper archive.

1. Delpher.nl (archive 17th - 20th Century)
Archive of a million Dutch newspapers, books and magazines. There is an introduction video on Delpher in Dutch available. Mind that not all local Dutch newspapers are included! Check the websites of city or provincial archives for those newspapers.

2. New York Times (archive: 1851-2017)
We have two databases that provide access to this well known American newspaper:
  • NY Times (archive: 1851 - current issue)
Since September 2019 we have a subscription to the complete articles of this newspaper. We also have access to their archive with their scanned articles from 1851 until 2002)
  • Proquest historical newspapers: NY Times (archive 1851 - 2017)
The proquest database version offers the archive of this newspaper.

3. The Times digital archive (archive 1986 - current issue)
British newspaper published in London.

4. The Washington Post (archive 2014 - current issue)
Searchable on keywords. From 1980 indexes are avalable.
Some older articles are available on paper/microfilm: 1981 - 1983 and 1989-1990.

5. EU Observer (2000 - current issue)
Independant European Union newspaper, see blogpost

6. Nexis Uni (including Dutch news from 1990s)
This database gives access to international, national and local Dutch newspaper articles. Recently we made a short video on how this database works.

Access to other newspaper archives?
If you would like to have access to the archives of -for instance- the Guardian, I advise you to take a subscription to our national library (= KB: Koninklijke Bibliotheek). They have a large newspaper collection that you can access from your pc or laptop. The annual fee for a KB subscription is 15 euro's. For students of the UvA there is even a discount of 50%.

Finally, there is also a list on Wikipedia with online archives of newspapers worldwide.
