New database: Oxford Encyclopedia of African History
We recently bought access to the Oxford Encyclopedia of African History. Where more general encyclopedias (like Encyclopaedia Britannica or Wikipedia) provide an overview on a variety of topics, this subject encyclopedia focuses specifically on the topic of African History. All articles or entries are written and peer reviewed by experts.
ACCESS NEW ENCYCLOPEDIA
Both general and subject encyclopedias are especially important when you start your research. They provide:
- a short general introduction and background information to a topic,
- keywords that you could use as search terms in databases (see blogpost on finding the right keywords),
- high quality references to other sources and literature,
- practical data on events and/or persons.
Searching in Oxford Encyclopedia of African History
There are two search options:
- Basic: with keywords
- Advanced: browsing topics

Because of the general information in the articles, it is usually not necessary to cite them.
